Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, très épineuse, émergeant d’un rhizome rampant, à tiges glabres ou légèrement poilues, dressées, très ramifiées, avec peu ou pas de feuilles dans le bas.

Feuilles alternes, simples, lancéolées à oblongues, dentées-épineuses, de 9 cm de long au plus, les supérieures embrassant la tige. Nervures très marquées et disposées en réseau.

Fleurs jaunes ou jaunâtres, toutes tubulées, réunies en capitules aplatis de 12 à 30 mm de diamètre, entourés de bractées foliacées sèches, couleur paille. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes à aigrette qui se détache du reste du fruit à maturité, couverts de poils jaune doré.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, very spiny, emerging from a trailing rhizome. Stems glabrous or slightly hairy, erect, very branched, with few or no leaves at bottom.

Leaves alternate, simple, lanceolate to oblong, toothed-spiny, of 9 cm long at most, the higher ones clasping the stem. Veins very marked and laid out in network.

Flowers yellowish or yellow, joined together in flattened capitula from 12 to 30 mm in diameter, with only disk-florets, surrounded by dry foliaceous bracts, coloured like straw. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, achenes with a pappus which is detached from the rest of the fruit at maturity, covered in gilded yellow hairs.

en référence à la légende selon laquelle Charlemagne aurait utilisé

cette plante pour soigner son armée atteinte de la peste.

Corymbosa : emprunt du latin corymbosus, -a, -um (adj.)

[ < corymbus, -i (nom) = la grappe de fleurs, le corymbe, forme

latinisée du grec ancien κόρυμβος, -ου (nom) = la grappe de fleurs ]

= en forme de corymbe, disposé en corymbe, en référence à la

disposition des fleurs dans l’inflorescence.

Carlina : Medieval name, derived from Carolus, -i (proper noun)

= Charles, referring to the legend that Charlemagne would have used

this plant to cure his army of the plague.

Corymbosa : borrowed from Latin corymbosus, -a, -um (adj)

[ < corymbus, -i (noun) = bunch of flowers, corymb, Latinized

form of the Classical Greek κόρυμβος, -ου (noun) = bunch of

flowers ] = corymb-shaped, corymbose, laid out in corymb, referring to

the arrangement of the flowers in the inflorescence.
