Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, extrêmement variable, à tiges poilues ou glabres, ramifiées, cylindriques, rougeâtres dans le bas, souvent striées.
Feuilles alternes, composées bipennées ou tripennées, à folioles linéaires ou étroitement lancéolées, entières, glabres ou pubescentes, à long pétiole. Feuilles de la base pouvant atteindre 30 cm de longueur.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, blanches à rosâtres, de 2 à 3 mm de diamètre, réunies en larges ombelles composées, planes, de 6 à 12 cm de diamètre, avec 20 à 40 rayons. Pétales extérieurs des fleurs extérieures plus grands. Très souvent fleurs du centre plus grandes, purpurines, sans pistil ni étamines. Bractées de l’involucre pennées, à segments linéaires, plus petites que les rayons principaux. Involucelle à bractéoles entières, plus petites que l’ombellule ou l’égalant. Ombelles se refermant et devenant concaves et ovoïdes à la fructification. Ovaire infère.
Fruits, diakènes épineux, ovoïdes, de 2 à 4 mm de long, à épines courtes. 2 styles persistants sur un bourrelet bien visible.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, extremely variable. Stems hairy or glabrous, branched, cylindrical, reddish at bottom, often striated.
Leaves alternate, compound bipinnately or tripinnately, with linear or narrowly lanceolate, entire, glabrous or pubescent leaflets, with a long petiole. Basal leaves being able to reach 30 cm long.
Flowers radially symmetrical, white to pinkish, from 2 to 3 mm in diameter, joined together in wide, plane compound umbels, from 6 to 12 cm in diameter, with 20 to 40 rays. External petals of external flowers larger. Very often flowers of centre larger, deep purple, without a pistil or stamens. Bracts of involucre pinnate, with linear segments, smaller than the main rays. Involucel with entire bracteoles, smaller than the umbellet or equal to it. Umbels closing and becoming concave and ovoid at fructification. Ovary inferior.
Fruits, spiny, ovoid diachenes, from 2 to 4 mm long, with short thorns. 2 persistent styles over a quite conspicuous fold.
