Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, vigoureuse, à gros bulbe de 5 à 15 cm de diamètre, le plus souvent saillant à la surface du sol.
Feuilles toutes basilaires, simples, lancéolées, entières, vert brillant, de 30 cm à 1 m de long et de 3 à 10 cm de large, aiguës au sommet, coriaces, glabres, flétries à la floraison.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, blanches, de 10 à 20 mm de diamètre, portées par des pédicelles plus longs qu’elles, groupées en longues grappes spiciformes au sommet d’une tige florale rougeâtre et dépourvue de feuilles. Périanthe à 6 tépales pétaloïdes, égaux, en étoiles, avec une rayure médiane verte ou rose. 6 étamines. 1 style grêle et 1 stigmate. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, capsules ovales, à section triangulaire et à graines ailées.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, vigorous. Bulb big, from 5 to 15 cm in diameter, generally protruding on the surface of the ground.
Leaves all basilar, simple, lanceolate, entire, bright green, from 30 cm to 1 m long and from 3 to 10 cm across, acute at the top, tough, glabrous, faded at flowering.
Flowers radially symmetrical, white, from 10 to 20 mm in diameter, carried by pedicels longer than them, grouped in long ear-shaped racemes at the top of a reddish floral stem without leaves. Perianth with 6 petaloid, equal tepals, in stars, with a green or pink median stripe. 6 stamens. 1 slender style and 1 stigma. Ovary superior.
Fruits, ovate capsules with a triangular section and winged seeds.

[ < mare, -is (nom) = la mer ] = maritime, qui provient de la mer
ou des régions en bord de mer.
Drimia : borrowed from Classical Greek δριμύς, -εῖα, -ύ (adj)
= acrid, pungent, referring to the bulbs which can irritate the skin
when touched.
Maritima : borrowed from Latin maritimus, -a, -um (adj)
[ < mare, -is (noun) = sea ] = maritime, which comes from the sea
or from the sea-coasts.
