Liane monoïque, herbacée, vigoureuse, à tiges côtelées, épaisses, fragiles, velues, rampantes ou grimpantes, à longues vrilles bifides opposées aux feuilles. Plante originaire d’Afrique, cultivée pour son fruit.

Feuilles alternes, simples, orbiculaires à cordiformes, grandes (jusqu’à 40 cm de long et de large), à nervation palmée, à bords peu profondément dentés, longuement pétiolées, sans stipules.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, blanc crème, de 40 à 60 mm de diamètre, solitaires ou par 2 à l’aisselle des feuilles, sur un long pédoncule poilu, s’ouvrant le matin et se fanant rapidement. Corolle à 5 pétales soudés à la base, chiffonnés. Calice à 5 sépales soudés, vert pâle, couverts de poils blancs. 3 styles. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, baies subglobuleuses à cylindriques, à poils blancs, de 30 à 80 cm de long (calebasse), vert pâle, devenant jaunâtres ou brun pâle à maturité. Graines nombreuses, de 7 à 20 mm de long, noyées dans une pulpe spongieuse.

Liana monoecious, herbaceous, vigorous. Stems ribbed, thick, brittle, very hairy, trailing or climbing, with long bifid tendrils opposite the leaves. Plant native to Africa, cultivated for its fruit.

Leaves alternate, simple, orbicular to heart-shaped, large (up to 40 cm long and across), with a palmate nervation, with little deeply toothed edges, lengthily petiolate, without stipules.

Flowers radially symmetrical, cream-coloured white, from 40 to 60 mm in diameter, solitary or by 2 at the axil of the leaves, on a long hairy peduncle, opening the morning and wilting quickly. Corolla with 5 partly fused, crumpled petals. Calyx with 5 fused sepals, pale green, covered in white hairs. 3 styles. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, subglobose to cylindrical berries, with white hairs, from 30 to 80 cm long (water-bottle), pale green, becoming yellowish or pale brown at maturity. Seeds many, from 7 to 20 mm long, embedded in a spongy pulp.

Étymologie  /  Etymology :

    Lagenaria : emprunt du latin lagœna, -ae  (nom) = la bouteille, la cruche,

        le flacon, forme latinisée du grec ancien λάγυνος, -ου  (nom)

        = la bouteille, en référence à la forme des fruits qui servaient de

        bouteilles.

    Vulgaris : emprunt du latin vulgaris, -is, -e (adj.)

        [ < vulgus, -i  (nom) = la foule, la multitude ] = ordinaire, commun,

        banal.


    Lagenaria : borrowed from Latin lagœna, -ae  (noun) = bottle, jug,

        Latinized form of the Classical Greek λάγυνος, -ου  (noun) = bottle,

        referring to the shape of the fruits which were used as bottles.

    Vulgaris : borrowed from Latin vulgaris, -is, -e  (adj)

        [ < vulgus, -i (noun) = crowd, multitude ] = ordinary, common,

        commonplace.
