Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à souche ligneuse, à tiges poilues, dressées ou ascendantes.
Feuilles alternes, divisées palmatifides, arrondies à cordiformes, pubescentes, pétiolées, à 5 à 7 lobes très dentés. Feuilles inférieures presque rondes, les supérieures à divisions plus profondes.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, lilas, violettes ou roses, veinées de rouge ou de pourpre, à pédoncule court, réunies par 2 à 8 en bouquets à l’aisselle des feuilles. Corolle à 5 pétales de 10 à 20 mm de long, à peine soudés à la base et échancrés, plus clairs que chez Malva sylvestris. Calice à 5 sépales libres, assez larges. Calicule à 3 larges bractées plus courtes que les sépales. Nombreuses étamines soudées en tube. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, 12 akènes au plus, soudés, lisses ou légèrement ridés.

Leaves alternate, dissected palmatifid, rounded to cordate, pubescent, petiolate, with 5 to 7 very toothed lobes. Lower leaves almost round, the higher ones with deeper divisions.
Flowers radially symmetrical, lilac, violet or pink, with red or purple veins, with a short peduncle, joined together by 2 to 8 in clusters at the axil of the leaves. Corolla with 5 petals from 10 to 20 mm long, scarcely partly fused and indented, paler than in Malva sylvestris. Calyx with 5 free, rather wide sepals. Epicalyx with 3 wide bracts shorter than the sepals. Numerous stamens, fused in tube. Ovary superior.
Fruits, 12 achenes at most, fused, smooth or slightly wrinkled.
