Plante herbacée, ligneuse à la base, hermaphrodite, aromatique, à tiges étalées à dressées, ramifiées, quadrangulaires, poilues.

Feuilles opposées, embrassantes, simples, ovales à orbiculaires, crénelées, poilues, sessiles, vertes, gaufrées, de 2,5 à 4,5 cm de long, de 2 à 3 cm de large.

Fleurs à symétrie presque radiaire, blanches, mauves ou roses, réunies en épis terminaux de verticilles de 4 à 15 cm de long. Corolle à 4 pétales lobés subégaux, poilus à l’extérieur, à lobe supérieur émarginé. Calice à 5 sépales verts, soudés, poilus. 4 étamines saillantes à filet blanc et à anthère mauve. 1 style bifide. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, akènes ovales, glabres, lisses, ovoïdes, de ± 1 mm de long, jaunes puis noirs à maturité, insérés par 4 à la base du calice persistant.

Flowers nearly radially symmetrical, white, mauve or pink, joined together in terminal spikes of whorls from 4 to 15 cm long. Corolla with 4 lobed, subequal petals, hairy outside, with upper lobe emarginate. Calyx with 5 green, fused, hairy sepals. 4 protruding stamens with white filament and with mauve anther. 1 bifid style. Ovary superior.

Fruits, achenes oval, glabrous, smooth, ovoid, ± 1 mm long, yellow then black at maturity, inserted by 4 into the base of the persistent calyx.
