Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, vivace, à tige cylindrique, simple, glabre, souvent teintée de brun rouge foncé.

Feuilles en rosette à la base et alternes, simples, lancéolées à oblongues, entières, glabres, certaines tachées de noir ou de violet, de 6 à 12 cm de long et de 1 à 3 cm de large. Feuilles caulinaires plus petites et engainant le bas de la tige. Bractées lancéolées, verdâtres ou pourprées, étroites, à peine plus courtes que l’ovaire, à 1 à 3 nervures.

Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, de 25 à 30 mm de long, réunies par 2 à 15 en épi lâche, cylindrique, de 5 à 12 cm de long. Pétales et sépales roses à rose vif, à nervures plus foncées, en casque fermé, arrondi. Labelle rose et blanc, de 8 à 12 mm de long et de 8 à 13 mm de large, trilobé, convexe, avec 2 rangées de points pourpres sur le lobe médian. Éperon droit, mince, rétréci au sommet, de 15 à 22 mm de long, horizontal à extrémité remontante, beaucoup plus long que l’ovaire. Ovaire infère.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, perennial. Stem cylindrical, simple, glabrous, often tinted of dark red brown.

Leaves in a rosette at the base and alternate, simple, lanceolate to oblong, entire, glabrous, some with black or purple marks, from 6 to 12 cm long and from 1 to 3 cm across. Stem-leaves smaller, sheathing the base of the stem. Bracts lanceolate, greenish or purplish, narrow, scarcely shorter than the ovary, with 1 to 3 veins.

Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, from 25 to 30 mm long, joined together by 2 to 15 in a loose, cylindrical spike from 5 to 12 cm long. Petals and sepals pink to bright pink, with darker veins, helmet-shaped, closed, rounded. Labellum pink and white, from 8 to 12 mm long and from 8 to 13 mm across, with 3 lobes, convex, with 2 rows of purple dots on the median lobe. Spur straight, thin, narrowed at the top, from 15 to 22 mm long, horizontal, with the tip upwards, much longer than the ovary. Ovary inferior.

Étymologie  /  Etymology :

    Orchis : emprunt du grec ancien ὄρχις, -ιος  (nom) = le testicule,

        nom donné à la plante par Théophraste, philosophe péripatéticien,

        disciple d’Aristote, botaniste et naturaliste, mort vers 288 av. J.-C.,

        en référence à la forme des bulbes.

    Anatolica : emprunt du latin anatolicus, -a, -um (adj.) = de l’Orient,

        oriental, forme latinisée du grec ancien ἀνατολικός, -ή, -όν  (adj.)

        [ < ἀνατολή, -ῆς  (nom) = le lever du soleil, l’Orient ] = oriental,

        en référence à sa zone d’habitat.


    Orchis : borrowed from Classical Greek ὄρχις, -ιος  (noun) = testicle,

        name given to the plant by Theophrastus, peripatetic philosopher,

        disciple of Aristotle, botanist and naturalist, died towards 288 BC,

        referring to the shape of the corms.

    Anatolica : borrowed from Latin anatolicus, -a, -um (adj) = of the East,

        Eastern, Latinized form of the Classical Greek ἀνατολικός, -ή, -όν  (adj)

        [ < ἀνατολή, -ῆς  (noun) = the sunrise, the East ] = Eastern,

        referring to its area of ​​habitat.
