Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges cannelées, ramifiées, glabres ou à poils épars.
Feuilles alternes, composées bi- à tripennées, de 3 à 6 cm de long, poilues, à segments dentés ovales, à pétiole plus court que le limbe.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, blanches, de 2,5 à 5 mm de diamètre, réunies en ombelles simples de 1 cm de large, à 2 à 4 rayons de longueur presque égale. Corolle à 5 pétales libres dont un beaucoup plus grand, profondément bilobé. Calice à 5 sépales soudés, minuscules. Bractées de l’involucre très développées, à larges bords membraneux. Ovaire infère.
Fruits, akènes jaune vert, ovoïdes, aplatis, beaucoup plus larges qu’épais, côtelés, de 12 à 16 mm de long, avec des crochets et des épines pourpres de 3 à 4 mm de long (plus longs que la largeur de l’akène). Côtes principales de l’akène portant des poils courts et appliqués.

Leaves alternate, compound bi- to tripinnately, from 3 to 6 cm long, hairy, with ovate, toothed segments, with a petiole shorter than the blade.
Flowers radially symmetrical, white, from 2.5 to 5 mm in diameter, joined together in simple umbels, 1 cm across, with 2 to 4 rays almost of the same length. Corolla with 5 free petals including one much larger, deeply two-lobed. Calyx with 5 fused, tiny sepals. Bracts of the involucre very developed, with wide membranous edges. Ovary inferior.
Fruits, green yellow, ovoid, flattened achenes, much wider than thick, ribbed, from 12 to 16 mm long, with hooks and purple thorns from 3 to 4 mm long (longer than the width of the achene). Main ribs of the achene carrying short and appressed hairs.

botaniste, médecin et secrétaire de l'Académie des Sciences de
Saint-Pétersbourg en Russie.
Intermedia : emprunt du latin intermedius, -a, -um (adj.) [ < inter (prép.)
= entre + medium, -i (nom) = le milieu, le centre ] = intermédiaire,
intercalé.
Orlaya : name given in honour of Johann Orlay (1770-ca 1827), botanist,
physician and secretary of the Academy of Sciences of Saint
Petersburg in Russia.
Intermedia : borrowed from Latin intermedius, -a, -um (adj)
