Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à plusieurs tiges velues, rameuses, couchées ou étalées.

Feuilles basilaires opposées, caulinaires alternes, simples, rondes à réniformes, de 8 à 15 mm de long, pétiolées, velues, à 5 à 11 lobes inégaux (le terminal plus large que les autres). Nervation pennée.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, blanches, de 5 à 10 mm de diamètre, solitaires sur un long pédoncule à la base des feuilles. Corolle à 4 pétales soudés en tube à la base, un peu inégaux (lobe supérieur un peu plus grand que les autres). Calice à 4 sépales subégaux, soudés à la base, velus, obtus, ciliés, étalés à la floraison, un peu plus courts que la corolle ou l’égalant. 2 étamines saillantes. 1 style et 1 stigmate entier. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, capsules couvertes de poils étalés, peu ou pas échancrées au sommet, à peu près aussi longues que les calices persistants qui les entourent.

Flowers radially symmetrical, white, from 5 to 10 mm in diameter, solitary on a long peduncle at the base of the leaves. Corolla with 4 petals a little unequal, fused in tube at the base (upper lobe a little larger than the others). Calyx with 4 subequal, partly fused, very hairy, blunt, ciliate sepals, spread out at flowering, a little shorter than the corolla or equalling it. 2 protruding stamens. 1 style and 1 entire stigma. Ovary superior.

Fruits, capsules covered in spread out hairs, little or not indented at the top, almost as long as the persistent calyxes which surround them.

Étymologie / Etymology :

Veronica : nom donné en l’honneur de Sainte Véronique. Selon la

tradition, quand le Christ est tombé sur le chemin vers le Golgotha,

une femme appelée Véronique lui essuya le visage et l’image du Christ

serait restée sur son voile. Les fleurs de ce genre apparaissent aux

environs de la Semaine Sainte.

Cymbalaria : emprunt du latin cymbalaria, -ae (nom)

[ < cymba, -ae (nom) = la barque, la nacelle ] = le nombril de Vénus

(plante), ancien nom de l’Umbilicus, en référence aux feuilles un peu

concaves.

Veronica : name given in honour of Saint Veronica. According to the

tradition, when Christ fell on the way to the Golgotha, a woman called

Veronica wiped his face and an image of Christ would have remained

on her veil. The flowers of this genus appear around the Holy Week.

Cymbalaria : borrowed from Latin cymbalaria, -ae (noun)

[ < cymba, -ae (noun) = boat, skiff ] = navel of Venus (plant),

old name of Umbilicus, referring to the slightly concave leaves.
