Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, hérissée de poils, à tiges dressées.

Feuilles alternes, simples, lancéolées, velues, les inférieures presque rubanées, lobées à la base, les supérieures plus étroites et sessiles.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, bleu foncé ou violettes à centre blanc formé de touffes de poils, de 10 à 20 mm de diamètre, réunies en cymes scorpioïdes ou en panicules. Pédicelles aussi longs que les sépales. Corolle à 5 pétales soudés à la base en tube droit et à lobes étalés, avec des écailles à poils très longs fermant la gorge. Étamines non saillantes. Calice divisé presque jusqu’à la base. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, groupe de 4 akènes ovoïdes, rugueux, avec un anneau basal épais.

Leaves alternate, simple, lanceolate, hairy, the lower ones almost ribboned, lobed at the base, the higher ones narrower and sessile.

Flowers radially symmetrical, dark blue or violet with white centre made of tufts of hairs, from 10 to 20 mm in diameter, joined together in scorpioid cymes or panicles. Pedicels as long as sepals. Corolla with 5 petals partly fused in a right tube and with spread out lobes, with scales with very long hairs closing the throat. Nonprotruding stamens. Calyx divided almost to the base. Ovary superior.

Fruits, group of 4 ovoid achenes, rough, with a thick basal ring.

Anchusa : Latinized form of the Classical Greek ἄγχουσα, -ης (noun)

= Alkanet, plant with red root used for cosmetic; name given to the

plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD.
