Arbrisseau hermaphrodite, très ramifié, à épines très acérées, droites et latérales. Jeunes branches densément pubescentes.

Feuilles alternes, composées trifoliées, à folioles elliptiques à obovales, entières, obtuses, velues et argentées au revers mais glabres au-dessus.

Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, jaunes, de 14 mm de long, solitaires ou réunies par 2 à 15 en grappes semblant couvrir presque toute la plante. Corolle papilionacée. 9 étamines soudées entre elles et 1 libre. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, gousses de 25 à 40 mm de long, subquadrangulaires, généralement densément couvertes de longs poils soyeux, à suture et nervure dorsale nettement ailées. Ils deviennent roussâtres lorsqu’ils sont complètement mûrs.

Shrub hermaphrodite, very branched, with very sharp-edged, straight and lateral thorns. Young branches densely pubescent.

Leaves alternate, compound trifoliate, with elliptic to obovate, entire, blunt leaflets, with a hairy silver-coloured reverse but glabrous above.

Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, yellow, of 14 mm long, solitary or joined together by 2 to 15 in racemes seeming to cover almost all the plant. Corolla papilionaceous. 9 stamens fused with each other and 1 free. Ovary superior.

Fruits, pods from 25 to 40 mm long, subquadrangular, generally densely covered in long, silky hairs, with a suture and a dorsal vein conspicuously winged. They become reddish when they are quite ripe.

Le nom grec signifie: qui a le calice coupé, en référence au calice qui

se fend en deux à la floraison.

Villosa : emprunt du latin villosus, -a, -um (adj.)

[ < villus, -i (nom) = le poil ] = velu, couvert de poils.

Calicotome : borrowed from Classical Greek κάλυξ, -υκος (noun)

= calyx + τομή -ης (noun) [ < τέμνω (verb) = to cut ] = cut,

split. The Greek noun means: with a cut calyx, referring to the

calyx which is split into two at flowering.

Villosa : borrowed from Latin villosus, -a, -um (adj)

[ < villus, -i (noun) = hair ] = very hairy, covered in hairs.
