Sous-arbrisseau monoïque, glabre, en dôme dense, développant un réseau impénétrable de tiges ligneuses à pointes épineuses.
Feuilles verticillées, simples, elliptiques, vert vif, entières, glabres, à sommet aigu ou émoussé.
Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, jaune orangé, réunies en ombelles de 3 ou 4 rayons. Bractées jaune doré, plus larges et plus courtes que la feuille sous-jacente. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, capsules de 3 à 4 mm de diamètre, verruqueuses, cannelées.

Shrublet monoecious, glabrous, in dense dome, developing an impenetrable network of woody stems with spiny points.
Leaves whorled, simple, elliptic, bright green, entire, glabrous, with an acute or blunted top.
Flowers radially symmetrical, orange yellow, joined together in umbels with 3 or 4 rays. Bracts gilded yellow, wider and shorter than the underlying leaf. Ovary superior.
Fruits, warty, grooved capsules from 3 to 4 mm in diameter.

Étymologie / Etymology :
Euphorbia : emprunt du latin euphorbia, -ae (nom), nom donné à la
plante par Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C., forme latinisée
du grec ancien εὐφόρβιον, -ου (nom) [ < εὖ (adv.) = bien +
φέρβω (verbe) = nourrir ] = bien nourri, gras, nom donné à la plante
par Dioscoride, médecin et botaniste grec mort en 90 apr. J.-C.

nom donné en l’honneur d’Euphorbe, médecin du roi Juba de
Mauritanie au 1er siècle après J.-C.
Acanthothamnos : adjectif créé par les botanistes [ < ἄκανθα, -ης (nom)
= l’épine, le piquant + θάμνος, -ου (nom) = le buisson, le taillis ]
= le buisson épineux, en référence à sa forme buissonante et à ses
tiges épineuses.
Euphorbia : borrowed from Latin euphorbia, -ae (noun), name given to
the plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD, Latinized form of
the Classical Greek εὐφόρβιον, -ου (noun) [ < εὖ (adv) = well +
φέρβω (verb) = to feed ] = well fed, fat, name given to the plant by
Dioscorides, Greek doctor and botanist died in 90 AD.
