Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, en touffe, à tiges érigées à étalées, velues, cylindriques, ramifiées, parfois teintées de rouge ou de bronze.

Feuilles à la base et opposées, divisées palmatiséquées, de 4 à 6 cm de long, à segments pennatilobés, poilues, à lobes terminés par une courte pointe, à pétiole poilu.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, rose vif, de 7 à 14 mm de diamètre, réunies par deux et portées par un long pédoncule. Corolle à 5 pétales libres, dressés, entiers ou légèrement échancrés, avec un onglet blanc rosé. Calice à 5 sépales libres, dressés, verts avec 2 lignes membraneuses blanchâtres, très pointus, à poils glanduleux (glande rouge). Étamines à anthère jaune. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, capsules de 4 mm de diamètre, velues, cannelées, surmontées d’un bec de 15 à 20 mm de long.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, tufted. Stems erect to spread out, very hairy, cylindrical, branched, sometimes tinted of red or bronze.

Leaves at the base and opposite, dissected palmatisect, from 4 to 6 cm long, with pennatilobate, hairy segments, with lobes finished by a short point, with a hairy petiole.

Flowers radially symmetrical, bright pink, from 7 to 14 mm in diameter, joined together in pairs and carried by a long peduncle. Corolla with 5 free, erect, entire or slightly indented petals, with a pinkish white claw. Calyx with 5 free, erect, green sepals, with 2 membranous whitish lines, sharply pointed, with glandulous hairs (red gland). Ovary superior.

Fruits, very hairy, grooved, capsules, 4 mm in diameter, surmounted by a beak from 15 to 20 mm long.

Étymologie  /  Etymology :

    Geranium : emprunt du latin geranion, -ii  (nom) = le géranium,

        nom donné à la plante par Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C.,

        forme latinisée du grec ancien γεράνιον, -ου  (nom)

        [ < γέρανος, -ου  (nom) = la grue ] = le géranium, nom donné à la

        plante par Dioscoride, médecin et botaniste grec mort en 90 apr. J.-C.,

        en référence à la forme des fruits semblables à un bec de grue.

    Purpureum : emprunt du latin purpureus, -a, -um (adj.)

        [ < purpura, -ae  (nom) = le murex (coquillage qui produit la pourpre) ]

        = de couleur pourpre, pourpré.


    Geranium : borrowed from Latin geranion, -ii  (noun) = geranium,

        name given to the plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD,

        Latinized form of the Classical Greek γεράνιον, -ου  (noun)

        [ < γέρανος, -ου  (noun) = crane ] = geranium, name given to the plant

        by Dioscorides, Greek doctor and botanist died in 90 AD, referring to

        the shape of the fruits similar to a crane's beak.

    Purpureum : borrowed from Latin purpureus, -a, -um  (adj)

        [ < purpura, -ae  (noun) = murex (shell which produces purple) ]

        = purple coloured, purplish.
