Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges dressées ou étalées, généralement ramifiées, blanchâtres ou jaunâtres, couvertes de longs poils étalés.

Feuilles alternes, simples, elliptiques à ovales, poilues, vert terne, pétiolées, de 20 à 50 mm de long et de 15 à 25 mm de large. Pétiole plus court que la moitié de la longueur du limbe.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, blanches à centre jaune, odorantes, de 5 à 8 mm de diamètre, avec des écailles dans la gorge, à pédicelle court, réunies en longues cymes unilatérales scorpioïdes. Corolle à 5 pétales étalés, soudés, formant un tube à la base. Calice à 5 sépales toujours dressés, linéaires à oblongs, velus. 5 étamines soudées à la corolle. Stigmate velu, pointu au sommet. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, 4 akènes, parfois 2 seulement.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite. Stems erect or spread out, generally branched, whitish or yellowish, covered in long spread out hairs.

Leaves alternate, simple, elliptic to ovate, hairy, dull green, petiolate, from 20 to 50 mm long and from 15 to 25 mm across. Petiole shorter than half of the blade.

Flowers radially symmetrical, white with yellow centre, odorous, from 5 to 8 mm in diameter, with scales in the throat, with a short pedicel, joined together in long, scorpioid, unilateral cymes. Corolla with 5 spread out, fused petals, forming a tube at the base. Calyx with 5 always erect, linear to oblong, very hairy sepals. 5 stamens fused with the corolla. Stigma very hairy, pointed at the top.Ovary superior.

Fruits, 4 achenes, sometimes only 2.

Étymologie  /  Etymology :

    Heliotropium : emprunt du latin heliotropium, -i  (nom)

        [ < ἥλιος, -ου  (nom) = le soleil + τρέπω  (verbe) = tourner, diriger ]

        = le tournesol, nom donné à la plante par Pline, naturaliste latin mort

        en 79 apr. J.-C., en référence aux fleurs qui se tournent vers le soleil.

    Hirsutissimum : emprunt du latin hirsutissimus, -a, -um  (superl.)

        [ < hirsutus, -a, -um  (adj.) = hérissé, rugueux ] = très rugueux, couvert

        de piquants.


    Heliotropium : borrowed from Latin heliotropium, -i  (noun)

        [ < ἥλιος, -ου  (noun) = sun + τρέπω  (verb) = to turn, to point ]

        = sunflower, name given to the plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist died

        in 79 AD, referring to the flowers that turn towards the sun.

    Hirsutissimum : borrowed from Latin hirsutissimus, -a, -um  (superl)

        [ < hirsutus, -a, -um  (adj) = shaggy, rough ] = very shaggy, very rough.
