Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, en touffe acaule.

Feuilles toutes en rosette à la base, divisées pennatipartites, à lobes triangulaires terminés par une courte épine, à face supérieure glabre et à face inférieure poilue.

Fleurs jaunes, réunies en capitules de 10 mm de diamètre, portés par une hampe florale assez épaisse, de 1 à 7 cm de long au plus, glabre, renflée et creuse dans sa partie supérieure. Bractées internes de l’involucre de 7 à 10 mm de long, dressées à la fructification, à peine plus courtes que les fleurs. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes à longue aigrette de poils raides, inégaux, denticulés.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, tufted, stemless.

Leaves all in a rosette at the base, dissected pinnatipartite, with triangular lobes finished by a short thorn, with the upper surface glabrous and the lower surface hairy.

Flowers yellow, joined together in capitula 10 mm in diameter, carried by a floral pole rather thick, from 1 to 7 cm long at most, glabrous, swollen and dug in its upper part. Internal bracts of the involucre from 7 to 10 mm long, erect at fructification, scarcely shorter than the flowers. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, achenes with a long pappus with stiff, unequal, denticulate hairs.

Hyoseris : emprunt du latin hyoseris, -is (nom) [ < ὗς, ὑός (nom)

= le porc + σέρις, -ιδος (nom) = la chicorée ] = la chicorée du porc,

nom donné à la plante par Pline, naturaliste latin mort en 79 apr. J.-C.,

en référence à son odeur désagréable.

Scabra : emprunt du latin scaber, -bra, -brum (adj.)

[ < scabo, -is, -ere (verbe) = gratter ] = rude, raboteux.

Hyoseris : borrowed from Latin hyoseris, -is (noun) [ < ὗς, ὑός (noun)

= pig + σέρις, -ιδος (noun) = chicory ] = pig’s chicory, name given to

the plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist died in 79 AD, referring to its

unpleasant odor.

Scabra : borrowed from Latin scaber, -bra, -brum (adj)

[ < scabo, -is, -ere (verb) = to scratch ] = rough, rugose, rugged.
