Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, plus ou moins vénéneuse, à tiges quadrangulaires, glabres ou à poils glanduleux.
Feuilles de la base opposées, les supérieures alternes, simples, ovales, de 6 à 10 cm de long, grossièrement dentées, à base cordée ou tronquée, à sommet aigu.
Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, rouge sombre ou brunâtres, à 2 lèvres, la supérieure nettement plus grande, réunies par 2 à 5 en petites grappes à long pédoncule inséré à l’aisselle d’une bractée foliacée à bords dentés. Corolle bilabiée, de 5 à 8 mm de long, avec une écaille arrondie en dedans de la lèvre supérieure. Ovaire supère.
Fruits, capsules globuleuses, glabres, d’environ 6 mm de diamètre, à pointe étroite au sommet.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite, more or less poisonous. Stems quadrangular, glabrous or with glandulous hairs.
Leaves of the base opposite, the higher ones alternate, simple, ovate, from 6 to 10 cm long, coarsely toothed, with a cordate or truncate base, with an acute top.
Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, dark red or brownish, with 2 lips, the higher one definitely larger, joined together by 2 to 5 in small racemes with a long peduncle inserted at the axil of a foliaceous bract with toothed edges. Corolla two-lipped, from 5 to 8 mm long, with a rounded scale inside the upper lip. Ovary superior.
Fruits, globose, glabrous capsules, approximately 6 mm in diameter, with a narrow point at the top.

Étymologie / Etymology :
Scrophularia : emprunt du latin scrofulae (scrophulae), -arum (nom)
[ < scrofa, -ae (nom) = la truie ] = les scrofules (gonflements des
ganglions lymphatiques du cou), en référence à l’utilisation de cette
plante pour soigner les truies sujettes à cette maladie.
Peregrina : emprunt du latin peregrinus, -a, -um (adj.) = étranger,
venant de l’étranger.
Scrophularia : borrowed from Latin scrofulae (scrophulae), -arum (noun)
[ < scrofa, -ae (noun) = sow ] = scrofula (swellings of the lymph glands
of the neck), referring to the use of this plant to treat sows prone to
this disease.
Peregrina : borrowed from Latin peregrinus, -a, -um (adj) = foreign,
coming from abroad.
