Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges dressées, glabres ou peu poilues, ramifiées ou non, renflées sous les capitules.

Feuilles alternes, simples, linéaires à lancéolées, en gouttière, les caulinaires embrassantes, rétrécies en pointe fine souvent onduleuse.

Fleurs jaunes, toutes ligulées, réunies en capitules solitaires de 18 à 40 mm de diamètre, entourés d’un involucre de 8 à 10 bractées terminées en pointe, dépassant les ligules. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes plumeux, à aigrette d’un blanc plus ou moins teinté de violet, groupés en grandes têtes de 12 cm de diamètre au plus.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite. Stems erect, glabrous or not very hairy, branched or not, swollen under the capitula.

Leaves alternate, simple, linear to lanceolate, in gutter, stem-leaves clasping, narrowed in a thin, often wavy point.

Flowers yellow, with only ray-florets, joined together in solitary capitula from 18 to 40 mm in diameter, surrounded by an involucre from 8 to 10 bracts finished in a point, exceeding the ligules. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, feathery achenes, with a white pappus more or less tinted of violet, joined together in large heads of 12 cm in diameter at most.

[ < τράγος, -ου (nom) = le bouc + πώγων, -ωνος (nom) = la barbe ]

= la barbe de bouc, le salsifis, nom donné à la plante par Théophraste,

philosophe péripatéticien, disciple d’Aristote, botaniste et naturaliste,

mort vers 288 av. J.-C., en référence aux aigrettes plumeuses des

fruits.

= le pré ] = des prés, qui pousse dans les prairies.

Latinized form of the Classical Greek τραγοπώγων, -ωνος (noun)

[ < τράγος, -ου (noun) = goat + πώγων, -ωνος (noun) = beard ]

= goat's beard, salsify, name given to the plant by Theophrastus,

peripatetic philosopher, disciple of Aristotle, botanist and naturalist,

died towards 288 BC, referring to the feathery pappus of the fruits.
