Plante herbacée, monoïque, urticante, à tiges quadrangulaires-arrondies, dressées, simples ou ramifiées.

Feuilles opposées, simples, ovales à cordiformes, dentées à lobées, vert sombre, poilues, de 20 à 60 mm de long, à pétiole presque aussi long que le limbe, à 4 stipules libres par nœud.

Fleurs à symétrie radiaire, verdâtres, mâles et femelles sur le même pied, à l’aisselle de la même feuille, les mâles minuscules, réunies en épis ramifiés et dressés, les femelles réunies en glomérules de 10 mm de diamètre, hérissés de poils, pendant sur un long pédoncule. Périanthe à 4 tépales. 4 étamines. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, akènes en glomérules arrondis, de 9 à 11 mm de diamètre, à graines de 2 mm.

Flowers radially symmetrical, greenish, the male and female ones on the same foot, at the axil of the same leaf, the male ones tiny, joined together in branched and erect spikes, the female ones joined together in glomeruli 10 mm in diameter, covered in hairs, hanging on a long peduncle. Perianth with 4 tepals. 4 stamens. Ovary superior.

Fruits, achenes in rounded glomeruli, from 9 to 11 mm in diameter, with seeds 2 mm.

des pilules, en référence à la forme des fruits.

Urtica : borrowed from Latin urtica, -ae (noun) [ < uro, -is, -ere (verb)

= burn ] = nettle, name given to the plant by Plinius, Latin naturalist

Pilulifera : adjective created by botanists [ < pilula, -ae (noun)

= pellet, pill + fero, fers, ferre (verb) = to bear ] = which bears pills,

referring to the shape of the fruits.
