Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, à tiges cylindriques, dichotomes, érigées, ramifiées, à poils très courts.

Feuilles opposées, simples, les inférieures spatulées, les supérieures oblongues, dentées, glabres, sans stipules.

Fleurs à symétrie presque radiaire, en tube, bleuâtres à mauve pâle, de 2,5 mm de diamètre, réunies en bouquets de 5 à 10 mm de diamètre. Pédoncule de l’inflorescence épais. Corolle à 5 pétales soudés à la base. Calice à 3 sépales verts, soudés, à 3 cornes épaisses, plus ou moins crochues, arquées vers l’extérieur, dont une beaucoup plus grande que les 2 autres. 3 étamines. Ovaire infère.

Fruits, akènes un peu asymétriques, de 4 à 6 mm de long, glabres, à 3 loges dont une seule est fertile, ressemblant à un bouquet d’épines prenant naissance au sommet d’une tige renflée.

Plant herbaceous, hermaphrodite. Stems cylindrical, dichotomous, erect, branched, with very short hairs.

Leaves opposite, simple, the lower ones spatulate, the higher ones oblong, toothed, glabrous, without stipules.

Flowers almost radially symmetrical, tubular, bluish to pale mauve, 2.5 mm in diameter, joined together in clusters from 5 to 10 mm in diameter. Peduncle of the inflorescence thick. Corolla with 5 partly fused petals. Calyx with 3 green, fused sepals, with 3 thick, more or less hooked horns, curved towards the outside, including one much larger than the 2 others. 3 stamens. Ovary inferior.

Fruits, a little asymmetrical achenes, from 4 to 6 mm long, glabrous, with 3 loculi among which only one is fertile, resembling a cluster of thorns developing at the top of a swollen stem.

    Valerianella : nom créé par les botanistes [ < valeriana, -ae  (nom)

        = la valériane + -ella  (suffixe) = petit ] = la petite valériane.

    Echinata : emprunt du latin echinatus, -a, -um  (adj.)

        [ < echinus, -i  (nom) = le hérisson, l’oursin ], forme latinisée du grec

        ancien ἐχῖνος, -ου  (nom) = le hérisson, l’oursin, en référence aux

        fruits hérissés de piquants.


    Valerianella : name created by botanists [ < valeriana, -ae  (noun)

        = valerian + -ella  (suffix) = petit ] = small valerian.

    Echinata : borrowed from Latin echinatus, -a, -um  (adj)

        [ < echinus, -i  (noun) = hedgehog, sea urchin ], Latinized form

        of the Classical Greek ἐχῖνος, -ου  (noun) = hedgehog, sea urchin,

        referring to the fruits covered in thorns.
