Plante herbacée, hermaphrodite, cultivée pour le fourrage, à tiges ramifiées, grimpantes, un peu pubescentes.

Feuilles alternes, composées paripennées, à 6 à 16 folioles entières, ovales à linéaires, à sommet tronqué ou concave, avec une pointe minuscule, terminées par une vrille ramifiée. Stipules dentées avec généralement une tache foncée.

Fleurs à symétrie bilatérale, bicolores, de 10 à 30 mm de long, solitaires ou par 2, sur un court pédoncule, à l’aisselle des feuilles. Corolle papilionacée, à étendard violet et à ailes pourpres. Calice poilu, à 5 dents égales, aussi longues que le tube du calice. Ovaire supère.

Fruits, gousses droites, presque glabres, brun jaunâtre à noires, de 25 à 70 mm de long, brisant le calice à maturité.

Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, bicoloured, from 10 to 30 mm long, solitary or by 2, on a short peduncle, at the axil of the leaves. Corolla papilionaceous, with a violet standard and purple wings. Calyx with 5 equal teeth, as long as the tube of the calyx. Ovary superior.

Fruits, straight, almost glabrous, yellowish brown to black pods, from 25 to 70 mm long, breaking the calyx at maturity.
